ADL LA: Strong ADL Representation at JPAC’s Capitol Summit 2023

May 25, 2023

Nearly 30 California-based ADL staff and volunteer leaders, including ADL Los Angeles Regional Board Chair Sharyn Nichols, ADL LA Regional Director Jeffrey Abrams, and Senior Associate Regional Director Matt Friedman, descended upon Sacramento on May 9-10 for JPAC’s (Jewish Public Affairs Committee) 2023 Capitol Summit (formerly Advocacy Day). The ADL representatives were among 300 participants state-wide who attended the conference and lobby day, including representatives from most major Jewish Federations in California, AJC, JCRCs, Jewish Family Services organizations, and more. Participants had the opportunity to meet with many elected officials, including members of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, and Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins.

Additionally, on the morning of May 9, prior to the beginning of the conference, an ADL delegation of Western Division leadership and California Regional Directors met with CA Attorney General Rob Bonta and also held a press conference to announce the publication of a new report on Extremism in California, Hate in the Golden State.

Aside from hearing presentations on important issues facing the Jewish community and other communities in the state, JPAC Capitol Summit participants met with over 100 legislators and their staffs on May 10 to advocate for legislation and funding for non-profit security grants, Holocaust and Genocide Education, and other items that support vulnerable communities in California. This was the second year in a row that ADL sent a large delegation to Sacramento, and we aim to continue to increase our participation in JPAC and the Capitol Summit for the foreseeable future.
